These paintings are based on stills from the 1966 film, the Battle of Algiers. These images come 11 minutes into the film when Ali la Pointe has been imprisoned in the Serkadji Prison, formerly known as the Barberousse Prison, which was built by the French colonizers in 1857. As he hears the sound of the guillotine, the camera pans to the prison walls.
